RESIDENTS on an unfinished housing estate are being promised fast improvements.

Orchard Park in Cambridge has been given extra funding by South Cambridgeshire District Council.

The council's cabinet has approved an extra £15,000 to carry out a range of immediate work to improve the appearance of the development, as identified through consultation with residents and the new shadow community council.

Projects will start in the coming weeks and include temporary fencing and signage, extra landscaping and an increase in general maintenance, such as litter picking.

Other work to be undertaken by developer Gallagher Estates includes the start of construction on three local play areas, the planting of 100 large trees and the creation of a large open public space featuring lawns, plants and a sensory garden.

Cllr David Bard, communities portfolio holder, said: "We are pleased to fund these improvements. We are continuing to work closely with our partners and hope they will follow our lead in finding extra contributions to make Orchard Park a more pleasant place to live."

Behind the scenes progress is slowly being made on the completion of "The Orchard Community Centre" - the legal beagles are following through the formal transfer processes of the Section 106 contract, and Gallagher have been in discussion with South Cambs District Council over the final snagging works, and local residents from the Orchard Parl (Interim) Community Council have been involved in some of the meetings to agree priorities.
